Edline is an effective tool for communication that allows students and their parents to receive periodic updates on academic progress. To further enhance communication, the English Department offers the following statement to clarify its consensus on use of this program. It is important to note that the only MCPS requirement for Edline is the posting of grades; other functions are at the teacher's discretion. Also, it is important to know that Edline is quite different from the program used in middle school. It is neither daily nor is it automatic in the English Department.
Expectations and Requirements:
- Grades are updated as grading of assignments is completed. The results of tests and quizzes are fairly immediate. Shorter writing assignments and projects are generally completed within 1 to 3 weeks from submission. Larger projects such as research papers and essays may take longer.
- Early in any quarter, Edline provides a rather inaccurate representation of a student's progress. Parents and students must consider the beginning grade in relation to the total number of assignments and their weights over the course of the entire quarter.
- Edline is not a replacement for a student's daily planner. Each student is responsible for maintaining and referring to an assignment book.
- Edline should not be used to determine the minimal amount of work that is necessary to maintain a grade, as the weight of one assignment will shift the balance dramatically.
- Grades posted reflect assessments of student work and the quality of its content.
- Barring errors in data entry, posted assignment grades are final.
- Interims and report cards are the formal venue for communication regarding progress. Final grades are calculated within 2 to 3 days after a quarter ends
